Its fair to say that this summers transfer market went crazy everywhere, everyone trying to improve their squads and push for success this season. Some teams surprised me with the money they spent, especially Manchester United! Now, as a Manchester City fan, I'm used to seeing my team splash the cash here there and everywhere, but United are usually slightly more conservative with their money.
With an approximate transfer bill of £50 million, the red devils were one of the highest spenders this summer. You can't blame them though, when players such as Shinji Kagawa and 'RVP' become available, only a fool would turn down the opportunity to sign them, and Sir Alex Ferguson is no fool. The Japanese wonder kid, Kagawa; who was signed from Borussia Dortmund for £17 million, is one of the best young prospects in the business and a great addition to United's ranks. His addition will bolster the reds' midfield, an area which they may need to start thinking about with the retirement of the legendary duo Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs fast approaching.
Arsenal's unfortunate loss resulted in a huge gain for their Northern rivals, as Arsenal's ex-captain and former talisman, Robin Van-Persie, joined the 11 time Barclays Premier League Champions in a £24 million deal. In my opinion, this is definately the signing of the summer, as last seasons golden boot winner could help the red devils return the league trophy 'back home' to Old Trafford. After scoring a healthy 30 league goals last season, the man known as 'RVP' will be looking to emulate his performances of last season and help his new outfit claim yet another league title.
On the Dutch internationals arrival at Old Trafford, his opening comment at his first press conference was his appreciation and thanks towards his former manager, Arsene Wenger, and his former club, Arsenal, for the happiness and comfort they'd brought him over his 8 year stay. ''The last eight years have been a big part of my life'' said RVP as he addressed the media. He then went on to say he looked forward to the big challenge ahead, and relished the opportunity to play for Manchester United. ''I am proud to be here'' said the Dutch goal machine.
The Old Trafford faithful will definately be hoping that their new signings will help them regain what they believe to be theirs, the Barclays Premier League, and maybe push for European glory. I can only imagine they'll be looking to silence their 'noisy neighbours' along the way!
Personally, I hope this isn't the case. As a Manchester City fan, I hope Lady Luck will be with us again, but we shall see! Bring on the Derby!
